Jon Garland, a right-handed pitcher from Kennedy High, was listed in Baseball America magazine as one of the top 13 prospects to play in the Area Code Games last month in Long Beach. The Area Code games, a showcase for the top seniors in the West, are attended by hundreds of college and professional scouts.

Stanford catcher Jon Schaeffer, a Harvard-Westlake High graduate, and Nevada Las Vegas third baseman Ryan Hankins, from Simi Valley High, were selected to the Cape Cod League all-star team.

Schaeffer played for Cotuit and Hankins for Orleans in the Cape Cod, which is considered the nation’s best summer college baseball league.

Cal State Northridge senior receiver David Romines leads the NCAA Division I-AA with 28 receptions. He is second with an average of 175.5 yards a game, trailing Evansville’s Sean Bennett, who caught seven passes for 193 yards in his only game.

Northridge quarterback Aaron Flowers is eighth in total offense and 25th in the I-AA in passing efficiency, with a rating of 139.8. Flowers has passed for 559 yards and run for 19.

Northwest Valley Conference quarterbacks, which include five returning starters, threw 16 scoring passes in openers last week. Last year, they combined for three.

Terrell Stanley of San Fernando, Scott Doherty of Birmingham and Travis Winn of Chatsworth each threw for three scores last week.
