The DreamWorks SKG executive who has been overseeing the company’s plans to build a new studio lot at Playa Vista is leaving to help run a new entertainment venture DreamWorks has with MCA Inc. and video game giant Sega.

Michael Montgomery will become president and chief operating officer of Sega GameWorks, which is developing so-called location-based entertainment centers where visitors will play an array of games.

Montgomery was recruited for the job by Skip Paul, a former top MCA executive who heads the venture as chairman and chief executive.

Montgomery said that he will continue working with DreamWorks as a consultant on the Playa Vista project. Financing is currently being raised.

Montgomery said DreamWorks supported his decision to take the job. “They have a piece of this. It’s right for me, and it’s right for them,” Montgomery said.

DreamWorks partner Jeffrey Katzenberg added that Montgomery “will still be part of the family and will also remain involved as a key member of our Playa Vista effort.”

Sega GameWorks is building large entertainment centers, which are expected to include video games, simulators, food and merchandise centers.
