The recent restoration of a community mural depicting Mexican and Chicano history will be celebrated Saturday at the Salvation Army Anaheim Temple Corps.

Damaged by graffiti several months ago, the 6-foot-tall, 106-foot-wide “Nuestra Experiencia en el Siglo Viente” (Our Experience in the 20th Century) mural on an a wall adjacent to the Salvation Army’s parking lot was restored by local artist Emigdio Vasquez.

In 1980, he painted the original artwork, which represents Mexican and Chicano history from the 1910 Mexican Revolution to the present day.

Concepcion Hernandez, a city community services outreach worker, said Vasquez applied a special clear coating to help protect the mural from graffiti or other damage.

Hernandez said the event is a way to rebuild respect for the mural and create awareness “that it was originally painted for the community.”

Capt. Antonio Horta of the Salvation Army Anaheim Temple Corps agreed.

“This celebration is intended to remind the people of Anaheim that this mural belongs to all of us and should be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations,” Horta said.

The 4 p.m. event at the Salvation Army, 201 E. Cypress St., is open to the public and will include a commemorative program and comments by Anaheim and Salvation Army officials. Information: (714) 778-5462 or (714) 502-0718.
