USC Survives Goal Drought to Beat UCI

USC survived a scoring drought in the second and third quarters to defeat fourth-ranked UC Irvine, 7-6, at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium in a nonconference men’s water polo game.

Simun Cimerman’s six-on-five goal with 50 seconds left proved to be the winner for the second-ranked Trojans.

The Trojans took a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Anteaters scored the first four goals in the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead. USC came back to take a 6-5 lead in the fourth quarter on Marko Zagar’s goal with 3:41 left, but UC Irvine’s Craig Watson scored with 3:11 left to tie the score, 6-6.

In the Aztec cross-country invitational:

SCC women place first--Nikee Chambers placed third in a time of 19:31 to lead the Southern California College women’s team to a first-place finish on the 5,000-meter course in Balboa Park.

The SCC men’s team placed fourth as Josh Schultz finished sixth (27:55) and Larry Holland was seventh (27:57) on the 10,000-meter Balboa Park course.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 4, Cal Poly Pomona 0--Dolores Browning, who was third in the nation in scoring last season, had all four goals for the Titans (4-2).

In the Rhode Island Classic women’s volleyball tournament:

Long Beach State wins--Misty May had 46 assists in the 49ers’ 15-11, 15-5, 15-2 victory over Rhode Island to win the tournament. Nique Crump had 14 kills to lead the 49ers over Massachusetts, 15-6, 15-6, 15-7, in a semifinal game.

In the Kansas women’s volleyball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton finishes second--Heather Bassett had 26 kills in two games for the Titans as they defeated Texas Pan American, 15-4, 15-8, 15-6, and Kansas, 15-5, 15-11, 15-8.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Southern California College 3, Point Loma 2--Christine Hins and Denise Lundberg each had six kills to lead SCC to a 2-15, 10-15, 15-8, 15-3, 15-12 victory.
