The Oxnard Housing Authority has been named one of the nation’s top housing agencies, recognized by federal officials for outstanding performance over the past three years.

The housing agency is set to receive an award Oct. 3 in Washington from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Selected from among 3,400 agencies nationwide, Oxnard’s housing authority performed exceptionally well in such areas as upkeep of its units, HUD officials said. Oxnard housing officials were also commended for working closely with tenants and launching a badly needed modernization program.

“We are very proud for the city,” Oxnard Mayor Manuel Lopez said. “I think everybody here supports the effort to provide quality housing for low-income people. I think that need has always been there and we have not shied away from meeting it.”

The city’s housing authority owns and operates 780 rental units for low-income families and subsidizes about 1,500 privately owned rental units.
