Conference to Focus on Latina Students

Estancia High School is hosting a conference for Latina teenagers and their mothers on Saturday, the first gathering of its type at the Costa Mesa school.

Assistant Principal Mimi Birch organized the event, named Adelante Mujer, as a way to address the high dropout rates among Latina high school students.

“These girls really need to be empowered,” Birch said. She hopes the conference will encourage mothers to emphasize the importance of education to their daughters and even to return to school themselves.

The girls and their mothers will hear several speakers, including Guadalupe Vidales, 35, who recently graduated from Orange Coast College and begins her psychology studies at UC Irvine this fall with a $14,000 scholarship from Soroptimist International of the Americas.

The program will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Barbara Van Holt Theater. Information: (714) 760-3410.
