Oxnard area physician Herbert C. Templeman, a former Port Hueneme city councilman and elementary school district board president, died Tuesday evening after suffering an apparent stroke and being treated at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, authorities said.

Templeman, who was born in Detroit, was 73.

He served 16 1/2 years on the Port Hueneme City Council before retiring in 1982. He was first elected to the Hueneme Elementary School District board in 1959, where he served 31 years, including many as president.

“He was Mr. Port Hueneme,” longtime Councilman Orvene Carpenter said. “He did a tremendous amount of work for the city.”

The elementary school district named its main office on Ventura Road after Templeman.

“He was a wonderful person to work with, very dedicated to the school system and the students,” trustee Elaine K. Garber said.

Templeman, an osteopath, had practiced medicine in the Oxnard and Port Hueneme area since 1956.

He was past president of the Port Hueneme Rotary Club and the board of trustees of Oxnard Community Hospital.

Services are pending.

Arrangements are being handled by Conrad-Carroll Mortuary in Oxnard.
