City Names Youth and Family Center

After two sessions at which members debated possible names for the city’s planned youth and family center, the City Council has opted for simplicity: “Tustin Youth and Family Center.”

The council had rejected several names proposed by the city’s recreation staff, including Newport-Sycamore Neighborhood Center and South Tustin Neighborhood Center, saying that they sounded like shopping center names.

Construction began earlier this month on the 6,000-square-foot facility at 14722 Newport Ave., and it is expected to open by year’s end.

A variety of recreation, education and social service programs for youth and their families will be offered by nonprofit groups and the city’s Community Services Department.
