All City Police Cars to Get Video Cameras
All city police cars will get video cameras later this year when Cypress receives $108,000 in new state aid to law enforcement.
After a hearing on the issue, the City Council voted unanimously Monday night to use most of the state money for the video cameras, which Police Chief Daryl Wicker estimated will cost $6,000 for each of the 14 police cars--a total of $84,000.
Wicker said the cameras will allow officers to record important evidence at the scenes of crimes.
The council voted to use the rest of the grant for general Police Department uses at the chief’s discretion.
The money, apportioned to cities across California according to population, is coming from a new program called Citizens’ Option for Public Safety, or COPS.
Cities and counties must use the grants for “front-line police services.”
