Assisted Suicide Debate Planned

Share

Two philosophy instructors at Pierce College will debate today the controversial issues of whether physician-assisted suicide is morally right and whether it should be legal.

Arguing against physician-assisted suicide will be associate instructor Betty Odello. Taking the other side will be instructor Nicholas Habib.

Odello, who teaches a course in bioethics and works part time as a nurse, said the issue is a critical one.

“It underlies our respect for mankind, and what it means to be human,” she said.

The philosophy department periodically stages debates on such topics to give students and the community a chance to learn about the important issues of the day.

“Our students are our future,” Odello said. “We can’t wait until we’re older to deal with these things.”

The free event will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Campus Center, 6201 Winnetka Ave., Woodland Hills. Audience questions and input will be welcome after the speakers’ remarks.
