Jack Tobin, a longtime investigative reporter for Time magazine and Sports Illustrated, died Thursday of cancer at UCLA Medical Center. He was 76.

Tobin, a graduate of Notre Dame, was also a sportswriter for the Times-owned Mirror in the 1950s and 1960s. He began his journalism career as a copy boy for the Long Beach Press-Telegram at 13. He was regarded by his peers as a thorough, knowledgeable investigative reporter.

Ed Guthman, former national editor of The Times who teaches investigating reporting at USC, had Tobin address his class every year for nine years.

Tobin’s family said donations to the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine will be appreciated.
