Northridge Slips Past Stanford in Soccer, 2-1

Danny Ortega and Chris Swanson scored as the Cal State Northridge defeated Stanford, 2-1, Friday in a nonconference men’s soccer game at Stanford.

A.J. Sauer scored in the sixth minute for the Cardinal, but Ortega answered in the 13th minute and Swanson scored in the 16th minute.

Stanford (4-2-2) outshot Northridge (3-2-1), 18-13. Matador goalkeeper Jorge Buery made three saves.

Northridge (3-2-1) plays at at Cal State Sacramento on Sunday.

Mission 4, Orange Coast 4--Mission squandered a three-goal lead in the second half of a Western State Conference match at Orange Coast.

Luis Mesta scored the first three goals for Mission (4-3-4). Mesta, a former Poly High standout, has 15 goals in 10 games.

Moorpark 2, Cypress 0--The Raiders (3-0-2) outshot Cypress, 30-4, in a nonconference game at Moorpark.

Joey Medaglia scored in the 37th minute on an 80-yard shot. Following a corner kick by Cypress (1-3), Medaglia’s clearing kick bounced over the head of goalkeeper Michael Palmer.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Ventura 3, Hancock 1--Roxanne Pena and Allyson Munday scored to break a 1-1 halftime tie and lift the Pirates (6-1, 2-0) over the Bulldogs (1-4, 1-1) in a WSC match at Hancock.

Glendale 1, Oxnard 1--Oxnard’s Priscilla Perez in the second half, enabling the Condors (0-2-1, 0-1-1) to tie Glendale (2-3-1, 0-1-1) in a WSC game at Oxnard College.

Hawaii Pacific 4, The Master’s 0--Chavela Garza scored twice for the Sea Warriors (2-4-1) in a nonconference rout of the the Mustangs (3-4) at The Master’s.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Rio Mesa 23, Newbury Park 36; Rio Mesa 19, Camarillo 41--Ronald Almaguer finished first and Scott Johnsen was third for the Spartans (2-0) in Oxnard.

WATER POLO

Burroughs 10, Fountain Valley 9--Alfonso Tucay had six goals for the Indians in the Rowland tournament.
