Toledo Sees Lots of Problems

On Monday afternoon in Westwood, UCLA’s football meeting room was a woodshed and Coach Bob Toledo had some switches.

“You’re probably going to see some low faces coming out of here,” Toledo said.

There were plenty.

Toledo reduced UCLA’s problems in a 38-9 loss at Michigan to mathematics. The Bruins had 55 plays, plus punts and field goals. They misfired on 15 of them--six dropped passes and nine errant throws.

Michigan had 85 plays. That made it a long day for UCLA’s defense.

“You look at the video, and there were plays there to be made, opportunities for us,” Toledo said. “We just didn’t make the plays or take advantage of the opportunities.”

And now the Bruins open Pacific 10 Conference play Saturday night at Oregon, which is 3-2 overall but 0-2 in conference play.

“This game is crucial for us,” said Toledo. “It’s crucial for Oregon. If we have any bowl aspirations, this game is important to both of us.”

UCLA could get tight end Mike Grieb, who has a sprained ankle, back for Saturday’s game against the Ducks, and cornerback Paul Guidry, who has a deep thigh bruise, is running again. Only freshman linebacker Rosco Zamano was injured in the Michigan game, suffering a dislocated knee that required surgery.

Toledo said Monday that Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr and some Wolverine players had been to see Zamano, who will be hospitalized in Ann Arbor the rest of this week.
