Sheriff’s Dept. Sets Up Shop at the Mall

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department set up shop Tuesday in The Oaks mall, fingerprinting children and handing out pamphlets on home safety.

The Oaks donated the 1,200-square-foot shop space so sheriff’s volunteers can answer questions, deliver public-safety lectures, schedule home-security inspections and even hand out crime statistics to house-hunting out-of-towners.

“People moving into the area can go in and find out how the calls for service are in their area and whether there’s a Neighborhood Watch,” said Deputy Greg Tougas.

“Our main function at this point is fingerprinting, due to the fact that the DMV’s not doing it anymore,” Tougas said.

Children can have fingerprints and photos taken for free under the Kid Care program at the Sheriff’s Resource Center.

Adults must pay $5 per card for fingerprinting and $3 for picture IDs to reimburse the Sheriff’s Department for the cost of materials, Tougas said.
