Excessive contributions by corporations and wealthy individuals distort the political process and are the underlying cause of the electorate’s disillusionment with politics (“Record Shots of Corporate Cash Enrich Parties,” Sept. 22). The best evidence is Bob Dole’s pathetic and suicidal defense of smoking and assault weapons. President Clinton’s veto of product liability reform is perhaps less telling, but equally indicative of the corrosive effect of excessive contributions by special interest groups.

If we are to cure the ills that have beset our democratic process, we must insist that campaign finance reform be brought back to the front burner of legislative priorities, and hold our elected officials responsible for their actions on this issue.
