Chris Davis, a bus driver with the city’s school district, has been named Driver of the Year by Ryder Student Transportation.

The annual award is given to Ryder’s top school bus driver in the Pacific region, which includes California, Oregon and Washington. The Tustin Unified School District contracts with Ryder for its bus service.

Davis, who has driven for the district since 1991, was honored by company executives and received a watch, trophy, plaque and gift certificates.

Previously, Davis won the Tustin Driver of the Month award three times and was named Tustin’s Driver of the Year for 1996.

“I get along well with the kids,” Davis said. “You need to have patience, understanding and a high degree of knowledge about each student.”

Ryder Regional Manager David Duke said Davis’ selection was based on his excellent service and safety record, perfect attendance, positive attitude and for going beyond the call of duty in his work.

Duke said Davis is known for taking “genuine care and concern for each of his passengers,” which includes returning lost coats, lunch boxes and other items.
