SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After a one-year hiatus, the city’s annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day will return Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Over the past few years, people have gotten more educated about how to dispose of motor oil and auto products, but I don’t think they are as familiar with how to get rid of household cleaners and pesticides,” city administrator JoAnn Corey said. “You’d be surprised how many people dispose of those items in regular trash.”

Hazardous Waste Collection Day did not take place last year because the city was in the process of awarding its trash hauling franchise to a new company.

This year, residents may take household cleaners, automotive products like motor oil, antifreeze and batteries, paint products including thinners and solvents, pesticides, herbicides, pool acids and photo chemicals to the drop-off point: the Unisys building, 25725 Jeronimo Road.

Hazardous items such as medical waste, radioactive materials and compressed gas cylinders will not be accepted.

Reservations are recommended but not required. Information: (800) 952-5566.
