Looking for gardening tips and techniques that really work in Southern California’s special climate?

Then spend the day at the upcoming Los Angeles Garden Show from Oct. 23 to 27., sponsored by The Times and Robinsons-May, and you can take in talks by expert gardeners, including Clair Martin on English roses, Renee Shepard on gourmet vegetables, Malanie Baer-Keeley on natives, Bob Galbreath on irrigation, Russ Waldrop on heirloom tomatoes, Times indoor gardening writer Joel Rapp and Times Garden Editor Robert Smaus.

With admission of $8 at the gate, it’s the cheapest gardening education around.

Talks are scheduled at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., and there will be several choices at each time. A complete listing of the 35 or so talks will appear in this section on Oct. 20.

There will also be 18 specially designed style gardens to walk through, a large marketplace for plants and garden accessories, and places to eat.

The nine-acre show will be held on the grounds of the Arboretum of Los Angeles County in Arcadia. It will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $8, $7 in advance through Ticketmaster or at the arboretum. The arboretum is just off the 210 Freeway at 301 N. Baldwin Ave. There will be plenty of parking, with a free shuttle, across the street at Santa Anita Park.
