Arizona Finds a Way to Win in the End

Keith Smith threw for 149 yards and ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns, leading Arizona to a 34-26 Pacific 10 Conference victory over Washington State on Saturday.

Both teams are 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The game was tied three times before Arizona scored a pair of touchdowns 5:01 apart in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats opened up a quick 14-0 lead when Smith scrambled nine yards around the right end for the first touchdown with 8:36 remaining in the first quarter.

Just 97 seconds later Trunge Canidate blocked a punt and ran it 13 yards into the end zone.

The Cougars answered with an 80-yard drive in 11 plays, capped by a quarterback sneak from Ryan Leaf, making it 14-7 with 57 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Another 80-yard Cougar drive tied it, 14-14, with Leaf passing eight yards to Chad Carpenter with 4:20 left in the half.

Matt Peyton’s 25-yard field goal for Arizona two seconds before halftime made it 17-14. Tony Truant tied the game when he booted a career-long 53-yard field goal against the wind 3:20 into the third quarter.

Smith’s 32-yard scramble through several missed tackles gave Arizona a first down at the Washington State 15, setting up Peyton’s second 25-yard field goal for a 20-17 lead with 2:35 remaining in the third quarter. Traunt tied it, 20-20, with a 37-yard field goal with 11:57 left.
