Reward Increased to $50,000 in Slaying of Bike Shop Owner

Hawthorne business owners and residents have raised the reward offered to catch the men that killed bicycle shop owner Gary Strahm to $50,000, more than double what was posted last month.

Police are continuing to search for suspects in the Aug. 5 death of Strahm, owner of Royal Cyclery. Strahm, 59, was slain when two men held him up at the Hawthorne Boulevard shop after it had closed for the evening. Police said the robbers told Strahm they wanted to buy a bike, but instead took $300 from the cash register and shot him.

The Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce, which is spearheading the fund-raising effort, said hundreds of businesses and residents have sent in money for the reward.

“Gary was a person who did a lot for this community,” said Chamber Executive Director Frank Gale. “His death was quite a loss to us.”
