Girl, 5, Becomes Ill at School, Dies
A 5-year-old girl fell sick at Telfair Elementary School on Monday and died a short time later at a nearby hospital, Los Angeles Unified School District officials said.
Kindergartner Mayra Venega, 5, “was eating her lunch and she took ill,” said LAUSD Deputy Supt. Ruben Zacarias. She was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where she died.
School district spokeswoman Diana Munatones said the girl reported having pain, though it was unknown whether the pain was in her chest or stomach.
The district’s crisis team was sent to the school and was expected to return today to counsel and comfort children.
Police and the county coroner are investigating. Coroner’s officials said it would take at least until the end of this week to determine the cause of death.
