Resale Store Geared to Dressing for Success

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Can there be any doubt that we are in the age of recycling or that resale has become a way of life for the dedicated, sharp bargain shopper? I see more and more high-quality resale stores opening while retailers are closing.

Of course, Southern California shoppers are blessed with the entertainment industry and its related businesses, which provide high-end apparel at great prices.

Cloud Nine, a shop in La Canada Flintridge, gears its fashion focus to the professional woman who wants to look like she’s making big money. If she is making big bucks, she’d be wise to spend it here on the good stuff. One good designer suit will outlast two or three middle-of-the-road brands.

A navy silk pantsuit from Ellen Tracy for $155 was a wonderful buy, especially when you consider that it sold for over $500. And who wouldn’t like the $750 Escada suit for $200? St. John knits are always chic, and a dress that retailed for $650 was tagged at $220.

There’s a big selection of slacks and jackets. I spotted a bright red Perry Ellis blazer that was $400 new going for $120. For very dressy occasions, a stunning full-length brocade coat with a matching sheath dress, which originally came from Bullocks and had a $300 price tag, was one-fourth of the original price.

The rack on the left side is for larger sizes, and Cloud Nine has many more than most resale stores. Some of the labels you’ll find are Carole Little, Chaus and Sharon Anthony.

In accessories, an authentic black Chanel handbag (the big one with the double Cs) might seem high at $400, but originally it was $1,200. And the bag was in perfect condition.

The store offers a Wish List, so you can let them know your favorite designers and your sizes (don’t forget shoe size). When clients bring in a load for consignment, owner Cheryl Mueller or manager Myrna Laue will see if anything matches your wish and give you a call.

The financial split when you bring clothes in for sale is 60% for the store and 40% for you. If the garment hasn’t sold after 90 days, you renegotiate with the store--to either pick it up or lower the price, or they will donate it to a local charity.
