Duck update--Mikhail Shtalenkov earned his first NHL shutout Wednesday in a 2-0 victory over Chicago, but Guy Hebert will be back in goal tonight. “Mike’s looked sharp all along and he deserved a chance,” Coach Ron Wilson said. “But with back-to-backs, I’ll still play Guy [tonight].” Teemu Selanne is leading the way offensively with two goals and three assists in three games. The Ducks were one of only two teams that beat Colorado three times last season before the Avalanche’s championship run. Detroit was the other.

Avalanche update--The 1996 Stanley Cup champions opened with losses to St. Louis and Dallas before beating San Jose, 6-0, on Tuesday. Patrick Roy made 24 saves for his 31st career shutout. “They were angry they lost a couple on the road to start the season,” said former Colorado winger Warren Rychel, who signed with the Ducks in the off-season. The tandem of Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg made Colorado one of only three teams that had two 100-point scorers last season. (The Ducks had two and Pittsburgh had three.) The Avalanche will play a week without winger Claude Lemieux, who has a pulled groin muscle.
