Boundaries Created for New School

Three months after construction began on the new campus, Oxnard School District trustees have decided which students will attend Norman R. Brekke Elementary School.

The attendance boundaries for the school, scheduled to open in July, include the northeast community between Camino Del Sol and Gonzalez Road, the railroad tracks that run along Oxnard Boulevard to the west and Rose Avenue to the east. Elementary students from Cesar Chavez, Sierra Linda and Emilie Ritchen schools may be bused to the new campus.

Trustee Sandra Herrera, who chaired the boundary committee, said Brekke School would be one of the most modern and technologically advanced elementary schools in the district.

“I think it will be an exciting environment for them and it will create a sense of a new beginning.” Herrera said.

There are enough students living within the boundaries to fill about 66% of the school’s capacity. The rest of the students are expected to come from planned residential developments.

That eastern area is mostly strawberry fields now, but several hundred homes are scheduled to be built in those areas. The school district anticipates one child for every two residences.

Once Brekke is filled to capacity, the district will reevaluate the boundaries.
