Neighbors Help Fund Gazebo Restoration

The winds and rains came along, huffing and puffing so hard that the landmark gazebo in Palos Verdes Estates was blown down five years ago. It took time to raise the money to reconstruct it, but the Torrance Beach gazebo is back up on Paseo del Mar, replacing the 1930 gazebo that used to stand there.

“I think a lot of people missed it,” said Dorothy Flood, treasurer of Palos Verdes Beautiful, one of the groups that paid for the renovation. “It’s a great view from there.”

The gazebo was built in 1930 when developers in the area were trying to sell lots there. Over the years, termites and weather took its toll. When a storm was blowing off the coast in March 1991, the wind moved up and over the cliff, catching the roof and tumbling the gazebo on its side.

The Malaga Cove Homeowners Assn. donated $1,000 to the $9,000 project, the Palos Verdes Estates Jubilee Committee gave $3,000, Palos Verdes Beautiful added $2,000 and the city gave the remaining $3,000.
