Library May Get Extra Day Due to Windfall

A citizens’ committee is recommending that a windfall in county library funds be used to keep the city’s branch open an additional day each week.
A new allocation formula based on population and library circulation gives La Palma’s library branch about $27,000 more annually than the city had expected.
“We are recommending that the money be used to keep the library open another day,” said Jessie Schuster, a member of the advisory committee, which studied several proposals.
The La Palma Library is now open four days a week--Tuesdays through Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Schuster, a volunteer library worker, said she polled other workers at the branch and that the consensus was for opening the branch another day.
“The people I talked to said they thought the extra day should be on Fridays,” she said.
The City Council is set to act on the committee’s recommendation at its meeting Tuesday.
Mayor Duane Schuster said he thinks the council will support the proposal. “That way there would be five unbroken days the library is open,” he said.
