College Hosts Mardi Gras-Style Fest

Cal Lutheran University will take on the air of New Orleans from Oct. 18 to 20 when the school celebrates its 32nd anniversary and homecoming with a Mardi Gras-style festival.

The fete will include a golf tournament, a homecoming parade, reunions for alumni and a carnival in the university’s Buth Park. The Cal Lutheran campus is at 60 W. Olsen Road in Thousand Oaks.

Cal Lutheran’s annual homecoming golf tournament will kick off the festival Friday at Simi Hills Golf Course, 5031 Alamo St. Check-in is at 11:30 a.m., with tee-off one hour later. Registration is $60 per person.

The 1996 homecoming king and queen will also be crowned Friday during a 7 p.m. coronation ceremony on campus in the Pavilion. The lights will go on at the carnival in Buth Park from 8 to 11 p.m., following the coronation and a fireworks show in Mount Clef Stadium.

On Saturday, a homecoming parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Memorial Parkway, followed by an 11 a.m. picnic in Kingsmen Park featuring entertainment by jazz artist Diz Mullins and his Dixie All Stars. Cost of the picnic is $6 per person, and $2 for children ages 5 to 12.

The Cal Lutheran Kingsmen football team will take on the Occidental College Tigers in Mount Clef Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday. Tickets for the game are $5, and $2 for children ages 5 to 12.

At 5 p.m., a Mardi Gras dinner and dance will be held in the gymnasium for all alumni, with reunions for the classes of 1991, 1986, 1981, 1976, 1971 and 1966 starting at 8:30 p.m. Cost of the dinner is $20, and children ages 5 to 12 eat for $5. Admission to the reunions is $10.

Next Sunday, an all-university worship service, featuring the Alumni Choir, will be held on campus at 10:30 a.m. in Samuelson Chapel.
