Share

Anthony Fugarino, a retired quality assurance inspector for a gyroscope manufacturer, died Friday at his home in Oxnard. He was 85.

A 15-year county resident, Fugarino was born April 10, 1911, in New York City, where he spent most of his life.

For 35 years, Fugarino worked as a quality assurance inspector for Sperry Gyroscope in New York. “They made precision equipment for guided missile systems and airplanes, and he’d check to make sure the equipment was within certain specifications,” said his daughter, Mary Taft of Oxnard.

He retired in May 1976.

Fugarino was devoted to his family and to his church, and while living in New York was a member of the Holy Name Society, Taft said. Over the years, he donated several gallons of blood to the American Red Cross, she said.

In June, he and his wife, Mary, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, Taft said. She attributed her parents’ long life together to “the grace of God, and the fact they were both very devoted to each other, always.”

In addition to his wife and daughter, Fugarino is survived by daughters Patricia Villamagna of Wisconsin, Leonilda Sferlazza of New York; son Joseph Fugarino of Kansas; 13 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the James A. Reardon Mortuary, Oxnard. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Santa Clara Catholic Church, Oxnard. Interment will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery, Oxnard.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Life Centers of Ventura County, Oxnard.
