Ivanisevic Is Czeched Out; Capriati Upsets Maleeva

Petr Korda of the Czech Republic defeated top-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Czech Indoor tennis tournament at Ostrava.

Korda defeated Ivanisevic, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and will play countryman Jiri Novak in the quarterfinals.

In other second-round matches, No. 2 Wayne Ferreira of South Africa defeated Joost Winnink of the Netherlands, 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 7-5; No. 6 Michael Stich of Germany beat countryman Alex Radulescu, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, and No. 7 Tim Henman beat fellow Briton Greg Rusedski, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.

Third-seeded Boris Becker of Germany withdrew, citing pain in his right wrist.

Jennifer Capriati upset seventh-seeded Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals of the European Indoors at Zurich, Switzerland. . . . Former NBA guard Alvin Robertson was found guilty of one count of burglary stemming from a rampage at his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in San Antonio. Robertson could face two to 20 years in prison for burglary with intent to commit theft.

Sacramento King center Olden Polynice was arrested at his home on domestic assault charges after his live-in girlfriend complained he yanked keys from her hand and threw her against a wall, Sacramento police said.

Undefeated heavyweight boxer Jo-el Scott was sentenced to at least three years in prison on attempted rape and hit-and-run charges.

Scott apologized in Albany (N.Y.) County Court for leaving the scene of an accident that critically injured a 4-year-old boy and for having sexual contact with three underage girls.

“You’re sorry you’re going to prison; you’re not sorry for that little kid, and you’re not sorry for those little girls,” Judge Thomas Breslin said.

John D’Acquisto, 44, a pitcher with the San Francisco Giants in the late 1970s, was sentenced to 63 months in a federal prison for defrauding Prudential Securities last year in New York.

Joe Bunn, dismissed from the Old Dominion basketball team last month after his former girlfriend accused him of assaulting her, was found guilty in Norfolk, Va., of misdemeanor assault and battery. He was ordered to serve 60 days in jail, spend 75 hours in community service and pay a $100 fine.

Oregon State has appealed to the NCAA regarding basketball recruit Corey Benjamin’s test scores after he failed to make the minimum score required for the Scholastic Assessment Test or the American College Testing exam. Benjamin, a 6-foot-6 forward from Fontana, took the ACT test again in late September and had an acceptable score, but the date was outside the NCAA-required testing period.

Julio Cesar Chavez, the former world junior-welterweight boxing champion, must appear before authorities Nov. 6 to answer charges that he failed to pay $1.4 million in back taxes.

The state Department of Fish and Game will conduct a special drawing for 98 bear tags on Oct. 31 in Sacramento.

UC Davis will begin a program to offer grants-in-aid to student athletes in all 23 intercollegiate sports in the fall of 1998, the school announced.
