Smith Barney Served Amended Lawsuit: The amended suit by current and former female employees expands the sexual discrimination and sexual harassment claims against the brokerage. Twenty women in 10 states, including California, have joined three New York women as plaintiffs in the new suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. They allege they were subjected to lewd language, unwelcome touching and employment practices that denied them opportunities and privileges allowed to men. The original suit against Smith Barney Inc. was filed in May by three employees at Smith Barney’s Garden City, N.Y., office. At the time, Smith Barney said it regularly followed up when women complained of discrimination and harassment, and that the Garden City complaints amounted to an isolated incident among the firm’s 470 branches. Mary McDermott, a spokeswoman for Smith Barney parent Travelers Group Inc., declined to comment.
