School District Celebrates Centennial With Community Fair
When the Wiseburn School District opened its first school in Hawthorne in 1896, it was located in an old train depot. The teacher would frequently stop in the middle of a lesson to sell a train ticket or two.
Times in the Hawthorne neighborhood, formerly a farming community of celery and bean fields, have changed. Today, the district will celebrate its history and evolution with a community fair.
“This a unique opportunity for us,” said Supt. Don Brann, who attended school in the district in the 1950s. “When the district was started they could have never anticipated what it would be like 100 years from now.”
When the district started, there was one school and eight students. Now the district has three schools and nearly 1,700 students.
Today’s centennial celebration will feature memorabilia from the district’s 100 years, including artwork by students of almost every decade. Music, games and entertainment will also be featured.
The Wiseburn Fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dana Middle School at 13530 Aviation Boulevard.
