Park Bench to Honor Girl to Be Dedicated

Share

Friends and family of Riley Morgan will gather at Seaview Park today to dedicate a park bench in her honor nearly a year and a half after her death.

Tracy Morgan said her 4-year-old daughter died in March 1995, more than two years after being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

After her death, neighbors began raising money to buy a bench to put in the park where the child used to play. With the $1,000 they collected, they have purchased a bench and a bronze plaque.

“It’s something really positive,” Morgan, 39, said of the community’s effort. “This has just gone over and above.”

The dedication will mark the first time a park bench has been donated to the city, and the City Council had to pass a new policy allowing officials to accept the gift.

“Hopefully there will be more to come,” said Bonnie Nicholl, Dana Point’s community services manager.

The dedication ceremony will be at noon. The park is on Calle la Primavera near St. Edward’s Church in Dana Point.
