“Tardy Parents Fined at Fenton,” Oct. 11.

Reform in LAUSD is great until it requires some commitment and sacrifice by students and / or parents. The principal of Fenton Avenue Charter School understands that fining late parents will deter their tardiness. Predictably, he receives criticism from a downtown administrator.

Likewise, establishing content-based standards backed by rigorous exams to be passed for promotion will deter illiteracy and innumeracy. However, the district’s idea of reform is making school so darn interesting that students can’t help but learn. Don’t bother expecting students to study and demonstrate competence on standardized tests.

Therefore, how will we make picking up kids on time so darn interesting parents can’t help but show up? Expect a new program to raise parent self-esteem.
