World Microprocessor Market Seen Doubling by 2000: The worldwide market for microprocessors--the brains of computer systems--is poised to grow at an 18% clip through 2000, with industry giant Intel Corp. leading the most profitable segment, according to a computer industry research firm. In a forecast to be released today, San Jose-based Dataquest projects the market will grow to $33.6 billion in 2000 from $14.1 billion in 1995. Dataquest said the computational complex instruction set computing, or CISC, segment, is expected to continue to be the most profitable sector of the entire semiconductor industry, producing more than 90% of microprocessor revenue and accounting for less than half of unit shipments.
