Contest Scares Up a Fine Field of Scarecrows

Share

Dozens of scarecrows line the sunflower fields at the Pumpkin Patch, both scaring and enticing children on the hunt for the great pumpkin.

The display, made up of contest entries, was the brainchild of Tom and Arlene Leonard, who own the business on Ventura Boulevard, just north of the Edwards Theaters multiplex in Camarillo.

“The children absolutely love them,” said Arlene Leonard. “The little ones are afraid, but they think they’re very interesting.”

Twenty-four entrants in three age groups competed for $1,500 in prizes, with the $500 grand prize going to Zach Shaffer and Jason Monahan, both of Camarillo, in the 8-14 age category.

The Leonards hope to lure even more entries next year, when the scarecrow contest becomes an annual event.

This weekend there will be a tractor parade, hay rides and music provided by a deejay at the Pumpkin Patch.

“This kind of thing brings the community together,” Arlene said.
