From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A package designed to look like a fertilizer bomb shut down all train traffic through Newark’s Penn Station for 26 minutes, authorities said. A 5:05 p.m. call received by the Amtrak reservation center in Fort Washington, Pa., warned that a bomb was on a train scheduled to leave New York’s Pennsylvania Station at 5:15 p.m., Amtrak spokeswoman Maureen Garrity said. The information did not reach the train until after it left; it was stopped in Newark and searched. Police found a box made to look like a bomb that contained fertilizer, Garrity said.
