Carl W. ‘Seger’ Segerhammar; Clergyman
The Rev. Carl W. “Seger” Segerhammar, a former president and bishop of the Pacific Southwest Synod of the Lutheran Church of America, died Tuesday morning in Thousand Oaks. He was 89.
Segerhammar was born June 15, 1907. He was a graduate of Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., and Augustana Theological Seminary in Rock Island, Ill. He was ordained in 1932.
In 1950, Segerhammar became president of the California Conference of the Augustana Lutheran Church and in 1962 was elected president of the Pacific Southwest Synod. He held the two posts until his retirement in 1975.
He served as assistant visitation pastor at Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks from 1975 until 1995.
Segerhammar was the author of three books and numerous magazine and professional articles. He was also the recipient of four honorary degrees.
His survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ruth Segerhammar, four children, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Samuelson Chapel at Cal Lutheran University.
Memorial donations may be sent to the synod office for scholarships at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, Cal Lutheran University and Bethany College.
