Fighting for the 69th

Three candidates, including incumbent Republican Jim Morrissey, are campaigning for the 69th Assembly District seat. A quick look at the district, the candidates and their stands on three issues:

The District: Includes most of Santa Ana, about half of Garden Grove, part of Anaheim, and very small parts of Orange and Fountain Valley

Background: County resident for 15 years; member, American Society of Civil Engineers; member, Structural Engineers Assn. of Southern California

JIM MORRISSEY

Age: 66

Party: Republican

Residence: Anaheim

Occupation: Incumbent; former owner of tool and machine company

Background: Two years’ service as Assemblyman; former small-business owner and 18-year resident of Anaheim

The Issues

* On School Vouchers

Opposes. “Public education worked well for me. The real issue is do we have sufficient resources to allocate to the public schools.”

“Let’s try them in a small-scale study for a semester and see if they work.”

Favors. “I think parents should have the choice of where their children go to school.”

* On Abortion

“I’m pro-choice, but I’m a Catholic and very much a believer that life starts at conception.”

“I’m pro-choice, but we all need more education on the issue.”

“I’m a Catholic and

pro-life.”

* On Welfare Reform

“I’m totally in favor of changing the whole incentive system. We have a burden to not only create the jobs to employ these people who need to work for a living, but also provide the child care for a single mother so she can move from being at home.”

“Short-term, we have to keep the system at least partially the way it is. Long-term, we should cut taxes responsibly to stimulate the economy and create jobs.”

“This will be our top issue in January, but it’s a very difficult nut to crack. My big thing for two years is to try and create jobs.”
