The American Heart Assn. is asking walkers of all ages to join in the fight against heart disease and stroke by participating in the Healthy Choice American Heart Walk at Cal State Northridge on Sunday.

The minimum donation to participate in the event is $15 per individual or $25 per family. Walkers are also asked to collect donations from friends and family members and can win prizes based on the amount of money they raise, organizers said.

Each walker who raises $40 will receive a water bottle while those who raise $75 will be awarded T-shirts. Sweatshirts, sport jackets and gift certificates will go to the walkers who raise the most money.

The heart association said proceeds from the event will go toward education and cardiovascular research.

“Most people think heart disease is something you worry about when you’re older,” said Heart Walk chairwoman Deborah Meehan. “But heart disease and stroke affects Americans of all ages. We need answers now, and research will help us get them.”

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. in Parking Lot T on the CSUN campus. The walk is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m. and will proceed along a flat course around the perimeter of the campus, heart association officials said. Officials estimate that the walk will take between one and two hours for most people.
