NHL to Review Rice’s Hit on Karpov

Brian Burke, NHL director of hockey operations, will review the tape of Thursday’s hit on Mighty Duck winger Valeri Karpov by Hartford’s Steve Rice. Rice was not penalized for the first-period check, but the league could still hand down a suspension.

Karpov was knocked unconscious by Rice and taken to a Hartford hospital. Tests indicated he suffered a concussion. Karpov had his head and neck checked again by team doctors on Friday. His status is day to day.

“I was worried because of the impact and the way he wasn’t moving,” Duck General Manager Jack Ferreira said. “I could tell he was out. They didn’t rerun it a lot on TV, so I couldn’t tell if [Rice] got his elbow up or not.”

Winger Paul Kariya, recovering from an abdominal injury, skated on his own and will practice with teammates for the first time today. It’s unlikely he will play against Calgary on Sunday. . . . The Ducks’ 1-7-2 record is their worst after 10 games in their four-year history. Last season, the Ducks were 2-8. In 1994-95, they were 4-6. And in 1993-94, they were 2-6-2.
