John Wetteland got the save in Andy Pettitte’s 1-0 victory in Game 5, but Jose Cardenal, New York Yankee first base and outfield coach, qualified for an assist.

The Braves had two on with two out in the ninth inning when Cardenal noticed that left-handed pinch-hitter Luis Polonia wasn’t getting around on Wetteland’s fastball.

Cardenal motioned to right fielder Paul O’Neill to move more toward center field, putting O’Neill in position to make a running, reaching catch of Polonia’s potential game-winning drive into the gap.

“I wouldn’t have caught it if Jose hadn’t moved me,” O’Neill said.

Said Cardenal, “Hopefully, I made George [Steinbrenner] happy.”
