A 16-year-old boy believed to be a gang member was shot four times Saturday at close range, apparently by rival gang members, authorities said.

The youth, whose name was not released, was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, but officials there declined to describe his condition.

He was shot twice in the abdomen, once in the back and once in the buttocks, said Officer Michael Ventura of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys Division.

The shooting occurred about 9:15 p.m. in the 6700 block of Kester Avenue, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The victim apparently was walking on the sidewalk when opposing gang members drove up and opened fire, authorities said.

Ventura said the shooters were driving an orange Toyota Celica.
