Tribe Can Build Everglades Homes

A dwindling tribe will be allowed to build homes in the environmentally sensitive Florida Everglades in an agreement reached with the National Parks Service. The Miccosukee tribe, which numbers about 700, claims that young tribal members with no place to build their own homes would move away, leaving the old members and forcing the tribe toward extinction. Much of the tribe’s 333-acre reservation is under water.
