A prisoner in the Central Men’s Jail collapsed twice and died early Sunday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said the 23-year-old inmate, whose name is not being released until relatives can be notified, first collapsed while taking a shower Saturday night. He was found by fellow inmates about 11:25 p.m. but was able to speak to deputies who responded to calls for help, officials said.

The man was taken to the jail’s medical ward, where he collapsed again, officials said, adding that medical employees performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called paramedics, who took the man to the emergency room at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was pronounced dead at 12:57 a.m.
