City Cited for Water Protection Efforts

The city has been designated a “ground water guardian” community by a national foundation in recognition of its effort to protect its underground supply.

The National Groundwater Foundation recognizes cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico for protecting water supplies from pollutants.

About 75% of Anaheim’s water is pumped from wells. As a result, ground water conservation and protection are key to the city’s resource planning efforts.

A “ground water guardian” team, made up of residents and representatives from business, education and government, worked with the city’s Public Utilities Department to develop technical assistance programs for businesses to reduce use of hazardous chemicals.

The team also developed educational materials for schools. A children’s festival is planned in May to teach Anaheim fourth- through sixth-graders about the importance of protecting water resources. Information: Sharon Lien at (714) 254-4279.
