Riordan Excused From Jury Duty to Attend Fund-Raiser

The wheels of justice may grind slowly, as the saying goes, but they can usually accommodate a prospective juror’s other pressing needs--to keep a doctor’s appointment, attend a funeral or take a day off when the flu bug bites.

As for Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, who began jury service on Oct. 21, the need was to show up at a long-scheduled fund-raising luncheon today for his reelection bid this spring.

So the mayor has been granted permission to take a day off from the jury assembly room in the Criminal Courts building downtown to share a $100-a-plate menu at a “Women for Riordan” fund-raiser at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Riordan has not been chosen for any of the panels he has been interviewed for during the six days he has served.
