Israel Stages Golan Military Drills
Israel staged a military exercise with tanks and infantry troops in the Golan Heights on Tuesday as government officials played down reports of new Syrian troop movements.
The Israeli daily Haaretz said U.S. spy satellites have recently detected unusual movements of Syrian units that operate surface-to-surface Scud missiles.
Israel’s minister of internal security, Avigdor Kahalani, said he doubted Syria would make any moves that could be interpreted as threatening Israeli civilians. He said it was more likely that Syria hoped to extract political concessions from Israel.
However, he added that Israel was prepared for any event. “If we have to respond, we will respond,” Kahalani said.
