Farmers’ Market Project to Begin

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled Sunday for a $120,000 improvement project to turn a vacant lot into the site for a farmers’ market that heralds the start of Santa Paula’s long-awaited downtown revitalization.

“This is kind of the first mini-project as part of the overall downtown improvement,” said Ken Cott, economic development director. “You’re going to see a lot of construction taking place in Santa Paula over the next 12 months.”

Decorative brick paving, landscaping that includes a small citrus orchard and electrical service are among the planned improvements for the half-block parcel bounded by Railroad Avenue and East Santa Barbara, Mill and 10th streets. Although known as the Farmers’ Market Project, the work will also make the tract in the city’s railroad corridor suitable for other community events, Cott said.

The project should be completed within two months, he said.

City Council members and other dignitaries will attend the noon groundbreaking ceremony.

About $2.4 million worth of downtown improvements paid for by grants and municipal redevelopment money are expected to begin in the spring as part of a larger effort to re-energize downtown.
