Forfeited Game

Re “University Chief Benches Football Team as a Lesson,” Oct. 26: He didn’t do it for money. He didn’t do it for votes. He did an act that he knew would be unpopular because it was the right thing to do. How incredibly refreshing it was to read about Robert Carothers, president of the University of Rhode Island, taking action against his football team.

After several students surrounded and invaded a frat house, and beat some of those inside, Carothers essentially suspended the entire squad and forfeited the next game. In these opportunistic times, when most actions are self-serving, this is an inspiriting story.
