May Leads 49ers in Exhibition Victory

Former Newport Harbor High standout Misty May had 55 assists, 10 digs and nine kills to help Long Beach State defeat Nittaidai University of Tokyo in four games in an exhibition women’s volleyball match at the Pyramid in Long Beach.

Jessica Alvarado had 16 kills to lead the 49ers in its 15-4, 15-6, 10-15, 15-10 victory. Long Beach State (23-0) is ranked third in the nation.

Nittaidai, ranked third in Japan, had just come off victories this week against UCLA and USC. Mayumi Itoh, Kanako Nishimura and Mitsuko Momose had 10 kills each to lead Nittaidai University.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Chapman 3, Occidental 0--Shawna Parkinson had 14 kills and 14 digs as host Chapman swept Occidental, 15-9, 15-13, 15-1.

In Big West Conference women’s soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 4, Pacific 0--Barbie Gill had two goals in the Titans’ victory. Dolores Browning and Shawna Panter each scored goals for Cal State Fullerton (13-3-1, 4-0-1). Suzy Strazulla had seven saves for the Titans, who host the Big West tournament starting Nov. 8.
